"Tsarevets - Autumn" ("Tzarevetz - esen")

    Artist: Zhaklina Yamelieva

Technique: Classical oil painting on canvas, executed entirely with palette knives (impasto technique)

Concept and Philosophical Narrative The canvas "Tsarevets - Autumn" by artist Zhaklina Yamelieva is a majestic allegory of spiritual fortitude, royal heritage, and enduring national roots. Guided by the central dichotomy of Ascension and the Fall, the solid stone fortress walls, gates, and historic ruins at the base of the hill represent historical trials, the passage of empires, and material limits (the Fall). Yet, the upward pyramidal surge of the hill, crowned by the Patriarchal Cathedral and cross silhouetted against a radiant azure sky, reveals spiritual victory, purification, and the soul's victorious Ascension into divine light.

Style and Plastic Execution The artwork features a dynamic, sculpted three-dimensional (3D) impasto relief with strong vertical momentum. Applied with confident palette knife strokes, every detail — from the textured stone blocks of the fortress gate to the autumnal green-gold tree crowns and the cathedral domes — carries rich physical weight and structural depth. The refined palette blends vibrant azure blue, deep olive green, warm ochre, sandstone tones, and soft lavender-pink light reflections along the foreground pathway.

Why This Painting Is a Unique Investment Iconic Bulgarian Heritage: A captivating landscape depicting the historic Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo, bringing noble dignity, historical presence, and timeless beauty to any fine art collection. Museum-Grade Quality: Created using top-tier European oil paints on premium canvas, ensuring long-term color brilliance and structural relief. Tactile Impasto Artistry: Heavy 3D palette knife application catches ambient light dynamically, bringing every stone wall, tree canopy, and cathedral tower to life.

    Tsarevets in the Summer

"Tsarevets - Autumn" — royal majesty, spiritual fortress, and azure light. The new oil canvas by Zhaklina Yamelieva ascends the iconic Tsarevets Hill in Veliko Tarnovo, where ancient fortress walls lead toward the radiant Patriarchal Cathedral. Guided by the philosophy of Ascension and the Fall, the contrast between rugged historical stones and soaring cathedral domes symbolizes endurance, grace, and spiritual Ascension. Sculpted entirely with palette knives using rich impasto technique, the painting fills any space with strength, warmth, and tactile beauty

The hill has been inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC. In the V-VII century AD. here was the largest city of the Byzantine Empire in the province of Lower Moesia - Zikideva.

In the 9th century an old Bulgarian settlement appeared here, which grew rapidly. The construction of the fortress wall, which is preserved to this day, began in the XII century. The wall is 1100 m long, in places up to 3.40 m thick and over 10 m high.

The fortress had three entrances, which can still be seen today. The main entrance, which was defended by towers, is located to the west. The second entrance is the so-called Small gate (Assen's) and is located on the northwestern fortress wall. The third entrance - the Frankhisar Gate, is at the southeastern end of the fortress and was guarded by a battle tower. This tower is known as the Baldwin Tower, named after the Latin Emperor Baldwin of Flanders, captured at the Battle of Edirne in 1205 by King Kaloyan. Legend has it that after the battle Baldwin was imprisoned in this tower, where he later died.

In the central part of the fortress is located the palace complex - several buildings surrounded by an inner stone wall, two battle towers and two entrances. It includes a throne room, a palace church and royal rooms.
