    Sea near Shabla

In antiquity, the Thracian tribes Kari and Geta inhabited these places, the region is part of the Odrysian kingdom. Numerous Thracian tombs rise in the vicinity and testify to this era. The ancient Thracian settlement from the 6th-5th century BC, which grew at the end of the 2nd century BC. in a port town, was discovered near the present-day fishing village of Karia on Cape Shabla. The port city of Karia in the bay south of Cape Shabla is identified with the ancient "Portus Karia (portus Karia) / Καρών Λιμένα (Karon limen)" - "Port of Shea" and was the most important transit port in the region from VI-V century BC to VI centuries. AD - the ancient Thracian Kareia [3] 1 100 years providing the road through the Thracian Chersonese (Bosphorus) to the mouth of the Danube and Pantikapaion (Crimea) turned into a fortress by the Romans, last reconstructed in the IV century during the early Byzantine era. It is evidenced by Arian, the Anonymous Periplus of the Black Sea and the Roman geographer Pomponius Mela in his work "Geography" in the middle of the 1st century AD, stating that it is located between Kalatis (modern Mangalia) and Tiristis (Kaliakra). at the nose of Shabla. Since then, the promontory has been an important navigational landmark on the west coast of the Euxine Pontus. There is a "fire watch" here, and in Roman times a tower with constant fire. This is confirmed by the columns found on the seabed by divers to the northeast of the current lighthouse and a stylized head of an owl made of marble. The finds from the excavations are stored in the museum in Dobrich and in the House of Culture in the city. Given the meaning of the word "Portus / Limen", it can be assumed that the ancient port at Cape Shabla was artificially created.
