Title: Tsarevets — The Lion
Artist: Zhaklina Yamelieva
Technique: Classical oil painting on canvas, executed with palette knives (3D impasto technique).
Concept & Narrative: The canvas "Tsarevets — The Lion" captures the monumental stone lion guarding the entrance road to the Patriarchal Cathedral in Veliko Tarnovo.
In the dichotomy of ASCENSION – THE FALL:
• THE FALL: The stone pedestal, ancient fortress walls, and historic path represent temporal trials, history's weight, and physical bounds.
• ASCENSION: The noble lion, lush hill greenery, and soaring cathedral domes symbolise spiritual strength, protection, and the soul's ultimate ASCENSION into light.
Style & Execution: Dynamic 3D impasto palette knife work in a vertical format. Heavy textures give tangible volume to the stone sculpture, fortress walls, and dramatic sky.
Palette: Ochre, sandstone, rich forest green, azure blue, and soft violet sky highlights.
Why Invest: • Iconic Bulgarian heritage & national pride. • Museum-grade canvas and oil paints. • Rich tactile texture with dynamic light play.

The first settlement built on this historic hill dates back to the Late Chalcolithic (4200 BC). It continued its development during the Bronze Age (IV-II BC) and the Iron Age (XIII-I BC), when its inhabitants were the Thracians. In V-VII on the site of the Thracian settlement is Zikideva - the largest city of the Byzantine Empire in the province of Lower Moesia. It was destroyed during the Avar-Slavic invasions in the 7th century.
