Today's church was built from 1834 to 1836 by Kolyo Ficheto.
It was consecrated on December 6, 1836 by the Metropolitan of Tarnovo Hilarion of Crete.
Kolyo Ficheto received the nickname "master" for this construction.
The place was chosen so that the church would dominate the then existing 31 mosques in the city.
The temple is a low 3-nave basilica with dimensions 37 m long and 17 m wide.
